Create Your Unique Life Vision

There comes a time when you realize you have approximately one million things you want to do, and you just have to sit down and figure out how you’re going to do them.

For that reason, I decided to make a 5-year-plan called Vision 2022.

First, I made a list of all the things I’d like to do in my life: big, small, profound, and superficial. Some of these things include learning how to code, writing a novel, keeping in touch with family, and reading books on finance.

Second, I guessed how long it’d take me to do each of these things, and I estimated how many hours per week I could devote to them.  I decided that the number depended on the time of year. In December, with end-of-year holidays, it’s difficult to find time. In the autumn and spring, however, when I feel most energized, I can dedicate more time.

Then, I did a bit of basic arithmetic to figure out how much time I am able to dedicate over 5 years. The amount of hours was truly astounding: 2,383, or about 60 work weeks! Time can really add up long-term.

Next, I set up a routine to periodically check in and assess Vision 2022 and my general wellness.

Then I put my tasks on a Trello board (Trello is basically an online space where you can write tasks on index cards and move them around as you complete them). Every two weeks I look at my Trello board and decide what I will work on in the coming weeks.

Lastly, I wrote a manifesto, similar to the platforms that American political parties write, except mine was only two pages long. In it, I set out the main goals of Vision 2022: grow my talent stack, build my platform, become brainier, go on adventures, feel better, and make more money.

I’ve been progressing on my vision for about a month now. It’s been going well, and I feel much more at ease knowing that I will, eventually, get to the tasks I’ve been thinking about working on for a long time.

Vision 2022 also helps me live in the moment, knowing that what I’m doing now is what I should be doing, and anything that I’m not doing now, I will do in the future. I also have two friends who are doing this with me, which adds a lot of fun.

It’s hard to keep one year’s resolution, let alone five, so this might be difficult, but I’m looking forward to the challenge. We’ll see how it goes!
